Dr. Getahun E. Agga is a Research Microbiologist at USDA-ARS Food Animal Environmental Systems Research Unit in Bowling Green, Kentucky focusing on antimicrobial resistance and food safety.
Areas of research
1) understand the epidemiology and dynamics of Salmonella, its antimicrobial resistance and serotype distribution in broiler production,
2) understand the epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance in broiler production using extended spectrum beta-lactamase producing E. coli as an indicator bacterium,
3) identify and evaluate alternative to antibiotics such as vaccines, biochar, phages, and probiotics for the control of antimicrobial resistant and foodborne bacteria in animal production facilities,
4) evaluate and improve manure treatment technologies such as anaerobic digestion and composting for safe utilization of animal manure as organic fertilizer,
5) evaluate detection and sampling methods for the study of antimicrobial resistant bacteria from animal production facilities,
6) use mathematical modeling, systematic reviews and meta-analysis, quantitative risk analysis, and machine learning to understand the complexity of antimicrobial resistance and to devise mitigation strategies.
