Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Stepped chutes and spillways are commonly used for routing discharges during flood events. In addition, stepped chutes are used for overtopping protection of earthen embankments. Stepped spillways provide significant energy dissipation due to its stepped feature; as a result, the stilling basin associated with stepped spillways required a smaller footprint than those for smooth chutes. Research on stepped chutes has increased over the past several decades to address questions related to hydrodynamics as well as applied design applications. This workshop will provide general considerations regarding the hydraulics of stepped spillways including the hydrodynamics, applied research, design methods, field observations, and operational records of stepped spillways.
