Technical Abstract: Technical Abstract: Current status and progress made towards improving the quality of fruits and vegetables through manipulation of the synthesis and detection of the plant hormone ethylene are described. The history of ethylene research is traced from its discovery in the early part of this century to the recent genetic engineering of antisense ACC synthase tomatoes that do not synthesize ethylene and petunias with a mutant ethylene receptor that are incapable of responding to ethylene and do not senesce. The potential of ethylene research in improving the quality of agriculture products is discussed.
