Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Following an outbreak of avian influenza in Mexico, vaccination was used for control, but the virus persisted in the poultry population in part because of antigenic drift. By using sera from DNA-vaccinated chickens, we used the hemagglutination inhibition test to determine the specific molecular markers related to antigenic drift for the Mexican lineage of viruses. We also want to test these and sera from chickens vaccinated with other types of vaccines using a variety of antigens of various H5 lineages. We want to correlate the genetic and antigenic relationship between different viruses to allow better selection of vaccines during outbreaks.
