Technical Abstract: The Dietary Guidelines for Americans provides science-based advice for the promotion of health and risk reduction for major chronic illnesses through diet and physical activity. They are the basis for Federal food programs, nutrition education, and policy development. The Dietary Guidelines, issued since 1980, are now based on a comprehensive scientific analysis of new research (a preponderance of evidence) by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, appointed by the Secretaries of U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services. Presently, poor dietary patterns and lack of physical activity are major causes of morbidity and mortality in the U.S. Cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and the increase in overweight and obesity are directly linked to this lifestyle. To address these public health issues, the guidelines embrace calorie intake recommendations appropriate for different activity levels and healthful eating patterns, which are based on the USDA Food Guide and the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) Eating Plan. Information is provided on achieving adequate nutrients within calorie needs, weight management and physical activity; whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and low/nonfat milk and milk products are encouraged. Integral to the new guidelines is information on making wise choices with carbohydrates, fats, sodium, potassium, alcoholic beverages, and food safety.
