Technical Abstract: Avian influenza virus (AIV) is an important pathogen of poultry as it can cause severe economic losses through disease, including respiratory signs and mortality, and effects on trade. Avian influenza virus is classified as type A influenza, which is a member of the orthomyxoviridae family. Characteristic of type A influenza, AIV has a segmented, single-stranded RNA genome (negative sense). Understanding the molecular characteristics of AIV has several applications; first this knowledge can be used to help determine the pathogenic potential of isolates; secondly it can be use utilized for molecular epidemiology and thirdly, it can be applied to the development and implementation of molecular diagnostic assays.
