Research Project: Genome-enabled Selection for Host Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) Resistance

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-155-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2026

Objective:
We will employ genome-enabled selection and doubled haploid technology toward the development of Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistant wheat and barley cultivars. Efficacy will be compared to standard MAS approaches. Changes in other agronomic traits will be monitored. Selection indices will be developed to select for resistance and other important traits.

Approach:
Using genome-wide marker information, we will evaluate genomic prediction accuracy and genetic correlations of Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) traits and related agronomic traits in wheat and barley. Genome-enabled estimates of breeding merit will be used to design crosses, and doubled haploids will be used to reduce the time from crossing to yield trials.
