Research Project: Developing Scab Resistant Wheat and Barley via Genomics

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-140-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2026

Objective:
1. Characterize the role of trichothecenes on infection and host responses. 2. Fine map and characterize the barley chromosome 2H bin8 Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistant QTL. 3. Identify DON and FHB resistant barley and wheat mutants.

Approach:
To examine the role of trichothecene accumulation during infection, histological and transcriptomics analysis will be conducted on susceptible barley mutants. We will also use recombinants in the chromosome 2H bin8 region to fine map the FHB resistance QTL. To identify genetic variation for resistance, will identify and characterize mutants in mutagenized barley and wheat populations.
