Research Project: Genetic Enhancement of Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) Resistance in Barley

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-147-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2026

Objective:
Develop a multi-parent population using the most resistant barley accessions possessing unique haplotypes at characterized Fusarium Head Blight (FHB)/DON loci; phenotype population for FHB and DON; genotype population with SNP markers and perform QTL analyses to map alleles conferring resistance to FHB and DON accumulation; and identify progeny with enhanced resistance.

Approach:
Eight parents will be intercrossed initially and through additional intercrosses and selfing generations, we will generate 800-1000 inbred lines that will be phenotyped for FHB, DON, and agro-morphological traits. After genotyping the population, we will perform QTL analyses to map loci contributing to FHB resistance and low DON accumulation.
