Research Project: Establishing the Infrastructure to Develop Prediction Tools for Diseases and Mycotoxins Affecting Corn to Better Inform Management Decisions (UKY)

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00102-001-011-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 19, 2020
End Date: Jun 18, 2025

Objective:
Develop predictive modeling tools for Northern corn leaf blight (NCLB) and gray leaf spot (GLS). The first objective is to establish the association between inoculum intensity, disease development and weather in small plot trials for gray leaf spot and northern corn leaf blight of corn. The second objective is to establish the association between initial inoculum, disease development and weather in commercial corn fields for gray leaf spot and northern corn leaf blight.

Approach:
University of Kentucky will collaborate with named research personnel to conduct research proposed in Objective 1 and Objective 2 of the NPMTI statement of work. Small plot experiments in Objective 1 will be established at the University of Kentucky Research and Education Center in Princeton, KY. Two different fields and planting dates will be used to replicate locations. Collaborations with County Agents will be established to locate 25 commercial corn fields across Kentucky for the experiment described under Objective 2. The Cooperator's PI will supervise a scientist assigned to the project to collect, ship and/or process corn residue and aerosol samples, monitor gray leaf spot and northern corn leaf blight development, and monitor growing conditions following the protocols detailed in the proposal.
