Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Vegetable oils and animal fats are abundant in the United States. It is important to convert these oils and fats into value-added industrial products. The target products include: (1) oxygenated fatty acids for lubricants, cosmetics, coatings, detergents, surfactants and polymers; (2) oxononanoic acid and nonenal from linoleic acid as intermediates for chemical synthesis; (3) lactones, methylketones and furans as flavors; (4) physiologically active agents such as antibacterials, antifungals, antivirals, enzyme inhibitors, herbicidals and insecticidals; (5) fatty amides and biopolymers as cosmetics and thermoplastics; (6) lipases in the production of structured lipids; (7) lipases in regio- and enantio-resolution of fine chemicals; and (8) biofuels from surplus oils and fats. Four microbial systems for producing hydroxy saturated and unsaturated fatty acids were identified in our lab. The following topics will be discussed in details: the production of 10-hydroxy and 10 ketostearic acids, the discovery of two new compounds 7,10 dihydroxy- and 12,13,17-trihydroxy- unsaturated fatty acids, and the identification of new lipases.
