The C-banded karyotype of ssp. falcata exhibited only centromeric bands in all the chromosomes with the exception of an additional band at the NOR region of the satellited chromosome. However, the C-banding pattern of ssp. coerulea had a multitude of bands. Bands are located at all the centromeres and a terminal band is located on all the short arms with the exception of the satellite chromosome. Interstitial bands are located on each of the short arms except on chromosome 7. A single interstitial band is located on each long arm of chromosomes 1, 2 and 3. Due to the presence of many distinct C-bands in ssp. coerulea and the lack of interstitial C-bands in ssp. falcata, it is possible to distinguish ssp. coerulea chromosomes from ssp. falcata in hybrids between these two species. Identification of individual chromosomes from these species in hybrids will allow the detection of the integration of genes from ssp. falcata to ssp. coerulea, the diploid progenitors to cultivated alfalfa. |
