Definition of the quantitative contents of gossypol in selection samples of cotton by capillary electrophoresis method [abstract]. Proceedings of the Eighth International Symposium on the Chemistry of Natural Compounds, June 15-17, 2009, Eskisehir, Turkey. p. 54. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Oil-seed meal from cotton seed contains high-quality protein and can be used in the animal industry. However, its application is limited by the presence of a poisonous substance called gossypol. There is a need to analyze the amount of gossypol in cottonseed as part of the current breeding programs in Uzbekistan. A quick analytical method is required. Spectrophotometric and HPLC methods have been used in the past. We have now developed a capillary electrophonetic method to quantitate gossypol in cottonseed and other tissues of the cotton plant. This method has several advantages including a minimal amount of tissue, solvents and reagents required, and the analysis time per sample is short. The method is applicable to the analysis of both cottonseed and other plant tissues. Quantitation is determined by integration of peak area and comparing that to a standard calibration curve. A complete analysis can be obtained in less than six minutes. Thus, this method provides an alternative analytical method to quantitate gossypol in various cotton tissues. |
