Interpretive Summary: Potato variety trials are conducted yearly at numerous eastern U.S. locations under a regional project. The data collected from this regional project have been assembled and made available via a database available through the internet. This database allows the user to sort the data by criteria of interest and can generate summaries of the data. This information will provide scientists, growers, and industry representatives with information on promising new potato varieties and allow comparisons with established varieties. Growers can use this information to make a decision on adopting new varieties for production in a more timely manner.

Technical Abstract: Online databases are no longer a novelty. However, for the potato growing and research community little effort has been put into collecting data from multiple states and provinces, and presenting it in a web-based database format for researchers and end users to utilize. The NE1031 regional potato variety development project is a USDA CSREES project focused on developing and evaluating the suitability of new and advanced cultivars from multiple breeding programs for a variety of environments. This multistate project has been in existence for almost two decades, and the collection of standardized data across many different sites has resulted in the development of a significant amount of potato trialing data. We have developed an interactive potato variety database that allows researchers and end-users to access and obtain potato variety trial results in one centralized site. Currently, the database is populated with the results of potato variety trials conducted in eight states (Florida, Maine, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia) and two Canadian provinces, (Prince Edward Isle and Quebec). It was developed primarily for scientists interested in potato variety development, growers, and allied industry members. The database is accessible through a combination of HTML (Hypertext Mark-up Language) and PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) coding. To date, users have accessed the database from across the U.S. and Canada, as well as world-wide.
