Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Three independent genes controlling resistance to Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV; family Potyviridae; genus Tritimovirus) were previously identified on chromosomes six (Wsm1), three (Wsm2) and ten (Wsm3) in the resistant maize (Zea mays L.) inbred line Pa405. Near isogenic lines (NIL) carrying these genes were developed and their responses to WSMV were determined. Wsm1 confers complete resistance under greenhouse and field conditions. In contrast, Wsm2 x Oh28 F1 plants showed delayed limited symptoms and Wsm3 x Oh28 F1 plants showed delayed dispersed spots and rings. A high-resolution map was constructed using 361 F2 progeny from a Pa405 x Oh28 cross, allowing for better localization of the three genes and definition of the NIL. The Wsm1, Wsm2 and Wsm3 NIL carried regions of 18 to 27 Cm from Pa405 on chr. six, three and ten, respectively. The high-resolution maps allowed us to define the locations of Wsm1, Wsm2 and Wsm3 to within 1 to 4 Cm.
