A systematic reappraisal of the genus Diuraphis Aizenberg (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington. 107(3):700-728 Interpretive Summary: Aphids are agriculturally important insects not only because of their feeding damage to plants but also from their ability to transmit plant diseases. This paper concentrates on the genus Diuraphis, which contains the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia, that has been responsible for millions of dollars of damage to wheat and barley in the United States. This work provides descriptions and illustrations of the winged and wingless adult stages of the world Diuraphis. Keys are provided for identification of the world species and a phylogenetic analysis is given to test relationships within the genus. This paper will provide information to port inspectors, field scouts, and biological control specialists. Technical Abstract: The genus Diuraphis contains several economically important species, including the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia. This paper is a revision of the world's Diuraphis that includes descriptions and illustrations of the alate and apterous viviparous stages. Included is a world key to separate the species as well as a phylogenetic analysis to test the relationships of the species within the genus. The current study has resulted in the synonomy of two species previously considered valid. A list of host plants is also given. |
