Technical Abstract: Twelve lean men (79.9 kg, 24.1 kg/m2, 18.3% BF) consumed an ad libitum cafeteria-style diet supplemented with drinks containing 2.1 MJ/d of carbohydrate (CHO), fat (FAT) and/or a combination of carbohydrate and protein (PRO) for 8 wk. Subjects received 2 of 3 treatments in randomized order. On the last 7 mornings of each 8wk treatment, subjects provided a fasting preprandial blood sample. Body weight was different between CHO/PRO and FAT (P<0.05), but no changes in BF%. Percent carbohydrate, protein, and fat intakes during the 8 wk treatments were 61.4/12.7/26.0% (CHO), 57.0/16.2/26.3% (PRO), and 46.8/12.7/41.2% (FAT). Least square means (SE) for 7d ghrelin (Total Ghrelin RIA, Linco) were 2726.0, 2658.7, and 2674.5 202.2 pg/mL for CHO, PRO and FAT, respectively (P>0.5). Despite different macronutrient intakes, preprandial ghrelin was not altered.
