Interpretive Summary: Heat-polymerized soybean oil has been widely used in ink industry. During production of heat-polymerized soybean oil, by-products are generated as volatile materials. Because of worker's safety and environmental consideration, we need to identify these compounds. Therefore, we analyzed the by-products using modern techniques. About 90% of the by-products were found to be environmentally friendly materials such as fatty acids.

Technical Abstract: Volatile by-products during heat polymerization of soybean oil at 330C have been analyzed using GC-MS and NMR. Color and viscosity changes were monitored for the heat polymerized soybean oil and the by-products. About 90% (w/w) of the by-products have been found to be decanoic, palmitic, linoleic, oleic and stearic acids and cis-9-tricosene. The by-products also contain small amounts of 3-eicosene, 9,17- octadecadienal and cyclotetracosene. The wt% of decanoic acid increased with reaction time while those of other components changed randomly.
