Technical Abstract: The book "Classification of Lepidoptera, Part 1. Introduction," by John B. Heppner is reviewed. The book includes a new proposed classification of the order Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), a dichotomous key for identification of superfamilies, phylogenetic diagrams illustrating suspected genealogical relationships among the major lineages, and numerous sillustrations. The treatment provides much useful information, bringing together widely scattered literature and concepts. However, there are a few shortcomings, including underestimates of species richness for the leafroller family (Tortricidae), the use of antiquated taxonomy, and omission of some recently published accounts of specific groups (e.g. slug caterpillars - Limacodidae).
