Research Project: Genomic Selection for Stable FHB Resistance in Winter Wheat and Barley

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-234-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2026
End Date: Apr 30, 2030

Objective:
1) Evaluate cooperative nurseries for adaptation and FHB resistance in wheat and barley. 2) Develop and employ a novel phenological genomic selection model select for stable resistance independent of weather around flowering time. 3) Accelerate breeding cycles using rapid generation advancement, rapidly sharing resulting wheat and barley inbreds with other breeders.

Approach:
Employ multi-trait genomic prediction and selection indices to develop varieties with exceptional FHB resistance and agronomics. Implement phenological models indexing weather relative to flowering to select on stable genetic resistance and against weather-sensitivity. Utilize rapid generation advancement to shorten breeding cycles, share germplasm with other breeders and data via T3.
