Objective:
Multiple tools to manage disease (host resistance and targeted fungicide management) are investigated to reduce losses due to Fusarium head blight in Idaho wheat and barley production. These objectives assist growers in economic and environmentally sustainable practices to produce healthy and mycotoxin-free grain for human consumption.
Approach:
Genetic resistance is the first line of defense to reducing disease and mycotoxins in Idaho cereals and are the least expensive option for producers. Screening varieties, identifying new sources of genetic resistance and targeted use of fungicides will maintain profitable production of cereals that provide the backbone of production systems.
