Research Project: Integrated Management of Fusarium Head Blight in Wheat and Barley in Pennsylvania

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-198-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2026
End Date: Apr 30, 2030

Objective:
Quantify the efficacy of new fungicide combinations and genetic resistance on FHB/DON in wheat and barley and compare these across environments. Quantify the cost-effectiveness of FHB forecast-based fungicide programs with growth-stage-based programs. Quantify the economic benefits of FHB and DON management programs and validate and advance risk prediction models.

Approach:
IMT and UFT trials test wheat and barley varieties at two research stations, following USWBSI protocols. Non-inoculated plots will be used to evaluate risk-based fungicide programs based on FHB forecasts (years 2-4). We will measure FHB index, yield, DON, Fusarium-damaged kernels, and malt quality. Analyses will test treatment effects, with data shared for regional meta-analyses.
