Research Project: Accelerating the Development of FHB-Resistant Soft Red Winter Wheat Varieties for Kentucky

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-159-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2026

Objective:
1) Release improved scab resistant SRW wheat varieties; 2) Release improved scab resistant germplasm to elevate the scab resistance of the region, 3) explore new approaches to Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistance breeding, and 4) communicate the importance of BMP (resistant varieties, FHB alerts, well timed fungicides) to all stakeholders in the wheat industry.

Approach:
Crossing – use rigorous scab nursery screening along with Popvar software to identify superior agronomic parents to cross with Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistant parents, use genomic and phenotypic selection of progeny, and confirm selections by repeated multi-location testing in scab nurseries and yield trials.
