Research Project: Genetic Characterization and Field Evaluation of Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) Resistance in Spring Wheat and Durum Wheat

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-156-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2026

Objective:
The overall objectives of the research include: 1) Finely map a major QTL on chromosome 2A in durum wheat, 2) Introgress Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistance QTL into durum wheat varieties, 3) Identify genes related to FHB susceptibility in durum wheat, 4) Screen various wheat germplasm and breeding lines in two FHB nurseries.

Approach:
SNP markers for Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistance QTL will be developed and used for introgression of FHB resistance into adapted durum wheat. Various introgression lines, breeding materials, and ESM mutants from durum wheat and spring wheat will be screened in greenhouse and field FHB nurseries, and gene mutations associated with phenotype changes will be identified.
