Research Project: Breeding Fusarium Head Blight Resistant Spring and Winter Barley

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-150-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2026

Objective:
1) create new breeding populations by crossing parents carrying resistance to Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) and other desirable traits; 2) conduct selection for FHB resistance and lower DON concentration in segregating breeding populations using genetic markers and field screening; and 3) advance candidates for new cultivar releases to regional testing and industry evaluation.

Approach:
Annually, we will make ~ 100 and 50 crosses for spring and winter barley, respectively. We will advance lines by single seed decent to the F3 and genotype, use genomic selection on multiple traits, and select lines to advance to yield trials and Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) nurseries.
