Research Project: Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) Resistant Wheat Cultivars for the Gulf Coast Region.

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-089-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2026

Objective:
The objective of this project is to utilize conventional breeding, molecular markers, genomic selection protocols and speed breeding to pyramid effective QTL in an adapted background to develop and commercialize Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistant cultivars that are highly productive and adapted to the Gulf Coast region.

Approach:
Breeding lines, regional nurseries and commercial cultivars will be screened in misted nurseries to quantify Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistance. Progeny of adapted resistant genotype crosses with stacked FHB QTL and DHs from elite crosses will be screened in regional yield trials and increased for release. Markers and genomic selection will validate resistance.
