Research Project: Developing FHB Resistant Hard Red Wheat Cultivars

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-217-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2026
End Date: Apr 30, 2030

Objective:
1) Release HRWW cultivars with resistance to scab combining major genes and QTL. 2) Identify new sources of scab resistance from advanced breeding lines. 3) Confirm new sources of resistance in the wheat wild relatives, Lysmus and Elymus. 4) Utilize high throughput phenotyping and genomic selection to increase selection efficiency.

Approach:
Conventional and genomic-assisted breeding, high throughput phenotyping such as FDK analysis using available techniques, image analysis to estimate FHB incidence and severity, and DON evaluation at the core lab in NDSU; Doubled haploid/speed breeding to shorten the breeding cycles.
