Research Project: Improving Efficiencies and Profitability in US Seaweed Farming

Location: Animal Production and Protection

Project Number: 0208-32000-001-047-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 30, 2025
End Date: Sep 29, 2027

Objective:
Initiate and conduct research that supports the Nation's emerging farmed seaweed industry by improving management practices and genetics to increase efficiencies and profitability for the production of foods, livestock feed ingredients, biostimulants, soil amendments, and novel food products. This meets USDA obligations under the 2019 Fiscal Year Appropriations Bill and following years.

Approach:
Through continual stakeholder engagement, maximize the impact of the Congressional Report ""Farming Seagrasses and seaweeds: Responsible Restoration & Revenue Generation" and identify gaps in research related to improving efficiencies and profitability in US seaweed farming. Conduct research to improve management practices and preserve and disseminate germplasm in support of the production of seaweed foods, livestock feed ingredients and other commercial products.
