Research Project: Breeding for Scab Resistance in Winter Small Grains for South Dakota

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-153-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2026

Objective:
The objective of this project is to develop new winter wheat and winter durum varieties and germplasm with enhanced resistance to Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) through a combination of major and minor resistance genes/QTLs into SD adapted backgrounds. This will help reduce the level of DON in the wheat supply chain.

Approach:
These objectives will be achieved through a combination of genotypic and phenotypic selection approaches for enhancing FHB resistance. The conventional field breeding efforts will be supplemented with speed breeding for the development of new and improved varieties and increase the efficiency of the breeding program in enhancing the FHB resistance.
