Research Project: Breeding Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistant Hard Winter Wheat for North Dakota

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-145-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2026

Objective:
1. Systematically raise the frequencies of useful Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistance genes within the NDSU HRWW breeding population. 2. Identify and breed lines with useful levels of native/background FHB resistance. 3. Employ routine single seed descent inbreeding for rapid generation advance. 4. Conduct an annual Winter Wheat x Fungicide performance field trial.

Approach:
Increase genetic diversity for FHB resistance in NDSU HRWW germplasm by continuing to acquire and incorporate new, literature-confirmed resistance QTL; finding and using native resistance QTL; and improving overall winter-hardiness and resistance to other diseases. Also assess the response of individual HRWW genotypes to FHB when timely treated with fungicide.
