Objective:
This research seeks to continue disease phenotyping nurseries in order to provide accurate data regarding Fusarium head blight to wheat producers, public, and private breeders in the region. This service increases the efficiency of producing hard winter wheat cultivars with improved levels of resistance to Fusarium head blight.
Approach:
Several scab-testing nurseries will be established near Manhattan, KS and the Horticulture Farm in Olathe, KS. Plots will be rated during the period of rapid disease development, machine-harvested and grain will be visually assessed for Fusarium-damaged kernels (FDK), and sent for determination of ppm deoxynivalenol (DON).
