The approach will include samples to be extracted by different procedures such as Stirring, Sonication, Shaking and Accelerated Solvent Extractor. Impact of solvent, temperature, and particle size on extraction of phenolic compounds from different food matrices will be evaluated.
3. Progress Report
This is a continuation of an agreement with Dionex Corporation, which furnishes FCMDL with consumables and annual maintenance for the Accelerated Solvent Extractor (ASE) in exchange for research on the optimization of extraction of phytochemicals from foods using the ASE. The ASE is used routinely at FCMDL for the development of methods that provide the maximum yield for phytochemicals. It is a fully automated system that allows optimization of extraction solvent, time, temperature, repeat cycles, solvent-solid ratios, rinse solutions, and multiple solvents. In this fiscal year, it has been applied to the extraction of phenolic compounds from conventionally and organically grown onion samples. In addition, we have also determined the distribution of phenolic phytochemicals in different onion layers using ASE. This agreement was monitored through routine communication with the Dionex Corporation.
