1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
The objective of this agreement is to develop an enzymatic extraction procedure to preserve the prebiotic active structures in orange peel, conduct in vitro studies (with Bob Rastall) and to confirm prebiotic properties.
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
ECONUGENICS will provide details on the enzymatic procedure to produce POS from citrus peel. ARS will develop an enzymatic extraction procedure for citrus peel POS that will be produced in the ERRC pilot plant and will perform in vitro prebiotic property analysis in collaboration with Bob Rastall.
3. Progress Report:
Conditions for pectic oligosaccharide and modified citrus pectin production using pectin lyase were developed and will be used for pilot plant trials planned at ERRC. Enzymatically-produced, arabinose-rich pectic oligosaccharides were obtained from the Technical University of Denmark for an ARS, Ames, IA swine-feeding trial of prebiotic activity. Modified citrus pectin did not lower cholesterol, but the lemon peel it was produced from did lower cholesterol in hamsters compared to a microcrystalline cellulose control.
