Plant geneticist Jay Shockey introduces acyltransferase genes from tung into the genome of Arabidopsis thaliana. The foreign DNA is transferred by dipping the plants’ flowers into a sucrose solution containing the bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens. The bacterial cells then carry plasmids bearing the tung genes and other important regulatory DNA elements into the genome of A. thaliana.
