Report on Research for NAMA Grant, July 2008

July 2008 Report NAMA

FHB Rating and Wheat Quality 2006 and 2007

Wheat Quality Evaluation of Soft Wheats Resistant to Fusarium Head Blight

Edward Souza, Research Geneticist, USDA-ARS

Summary of Findings

In four locations of comparison of fungicide treatments with non-fungicide treatments, no significant change in quality was observed from the application of fungicide at three locations and the fourth (Wooster) had modest improvement in some of the quality parameters.

By compiling results of FHB resistance with milling and baking quality we found no consistent trend between resistance and quality.  The best sources of FHB resistance such as Bess and Truman are moderate in quality.  Yet, in this grant's research trials at Wooster, several lines with very good quality also were found to have moderate FHB resistance.  AGI 401 followed by SC 1348 and SC 1358 fit these criteria and may be good choices for managing FHB infection while maintaining good soft wheat quality.

We found that the application of fungicide did not change grain falling number values.  This is in contrast to previous studies from Europe.

Tables comparing 377 wheat entries for FHB resistance and quality are included in this report for use by NAMA members and posted at the Soft Wheat Quality Laboratory web-site (/News/docs.htm?docid=17291).

We identified new candidate sources of resistance to FHB among the lines collected or developed by Dr. Souza.  These lines will be supplied to other researchers for characterization or use as breeding materials.

Proposed Goals of the Grant

1)     Provide to NAMA and wheat researchers the milling and baking quality evaluations of wheat genotypes.

2)  Link wheat quality data to the Fusarium head blight (FHB) resisitance evaluations and management information generated by researchers.
