Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: We served as symposium organizers and guest editors for set of papers published in 2002 that described the application of soil quality concepts in different agricultural systems. Following the publication of these articles a Letter to the Editor was submitted that was critical of statements that we made in a short introduction to the symposium papers in Agronomy Journal. This letter is our response to those criticisms. We show that attempts were made to provide opportunity for expression of alternative views of the soil quality concept and show that our introduction article is accurate in its description of the symposium papers and alternative viewpoints.
