Technical Abstract: Fantesk**TM is a starch-oil composite, that is prepared by jet-cooking oil, water, and starch. The product is a stable gel. It can contain up to 50% oil. This gel can be dried to a film and reduced to a dry, non-oily powder. This powder can be resuspended in water to produce a stable gel. Fantesk**TM was used to encapsulate Uniflex**R esters as lubricity/emulsifying agents in metalworking fluids. The antiwear properties of these encapsulated esters and their effectiveness to act as emulsifiers in metalworking fluids were evaluated. Its commercial use in metalworking fluids will enable the formulation to be prepared on site, thus eliminating the need to add toxic and environmentally harmful biocides. Acting as a powerful emulsifier to trap dirt and cuttings, it will also keep the metal surfaces clean during the cutting process. Preparation on site will reduce transportation costs and eliminate shelf life and long-term stability problems for these formulations. Starch encapsulated Uniflex**R esters formed stable emulsions with metalworking fluid additives and were shown to possess some lubricity properties. The lubricity performance was lower than the lubricity observed with standard lubricity additives used in the industry. The reduced lubricity performance is attributed to the percentage of starch in the Fantesk**TM formulation. New formulations were prepared using Fantesk**TM as an emulsifier, as well as an encapsulating agent for Uniflex**R esters, thus significantly reducing the amount of starch used in the formulations and improving their lubricity characteristics in metalworking fluids.
