Citation: N/A Interpretive Summary: The impact on nontarget natural resources of the chemicals used in production agriculture remains an unresolved issue with broad implications partly due to the costs associated with conducting assessment studies. Our research demonstrates that commercially available immunoassay chemistry can be applied to the testing necessary for environmental monitoring. This is one effective way in which the cost of these studies can be reduced without compromising their scientific integrity. Using these new tools which are inexpensive, rapid, easy to use, and provide quick answers, scientists are able to track the movement of agricultural chemicals from farm fields and into streams and groundwater in a more timely manner. This will enable more effective protection of the nation's water resources.
Technical Abstract: The cross reactivity expressed by commercially available ELISA kits developed for imazaquin and imazapyr can be used for estimating imazethapyr concentration in surface and groundwater collected from agricultural fields. Results on authentic samples indicate that dissolved constituents in the matrix can produce false positives. Spiked HPLC water showed a pH dependence of the dose response curve for imazethapyr using the imazaquin kit. Practical concentration range for estimating imazethapyr with the imazapyr kit is 1 to 125 ug/L and for the imazaquin kit is 8 to 800 ug/L.
