Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: During spring 1995, 12 potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) genotypes were tested for growth and yield in a randomized complete block, with 4 replications, at the Fort Valley State Univ., Agric. Res. Stn. Planting was done Mar 15 on ridges, 3m x 0.75m, with 0.30m spacing between plants. Plants were sampled at 47 & 64 days after planting (DAP), and harvested at 84 DAP. Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was determined with a Ceptometer. There were significant genotypic differences for all parameters studied. All genotypes achieved 98-100% emergence within 28 DAP. Leaf area index (LAI) ranged from 3.55 (Superior) to 4.77 (B0717-1) at 47 DAP, and from 4.18 (B0950-6) to 7.0 (B0684-5) at 64 DAP. Intercepted PAR ranged from 61.3 to 85.1% at 64 DAP. At final harvest, tuber yield varied from 21.1Mg/ha (B0950-6) to 44.8Mg/ha (B0903-2). Tuber yield was significantly correlated with LAI (r=0.47***), and tubers/plant (r-0.83***). All the new selections, except B0950-6, out-yielded cv. Superior by 13.3 to 80.6%. Generally higher photosynthate source (LAI) and greater sink strength contributed to the higher yield of the new selections. This study indicated the potential for high yields (>30Mg/ha) from new breeding lines in the warm climate of central Georgia.
