Interpretive Summary: Rust is a devastating disease of common bean in the U.S. The use of specific resistance genes in the host have provided an effective way to combat bean rust. Generally, the duration of the effectiveness of these resistance genes is short-lived because the pathogen has the ability to overcome them. There are many resistance genes available and new genes ar being introduced into bean cultivars on an annual basis. To ensure the uniqueness of these resistance genes we have proposed a process for cataloging and characterizing them. This categorization provides a framework for the maintenance and utilization of rust resistance genes for future generations of plant breeders, pathologists and geneticists.

Technical Abstract: The proposal is to name all characterized genes which confer resistance to bean rust with the symbol Ur. The Ur symbol has been used extensively by researchers working with genes resistant to bean rust. Ballantyne (1978) initially identified three independent loci Ur-1, Ur-2, and Ur-3 which conditioned resistance to bean rust. Stavely (personal communication) has stated that in the absence of the original rust isolates and genetic stocks, it is not possible to further compare the original Ur-1 and Ur-2 genes with contemporary resistance genes. However, the original Ur-3 gene described by Ballantyne (1978) has been reported by Stavely et al., (1989) as being the same gene present in five of the differential cultivars and would retain its original symbol. Other described genes would have to be renamed and would carry the same Ur symbol with an additional number to distinguish them from the original Ur-1, Ur-2, Ur-3 genes.
