Interpretive Summary: This is an annual report for NE-60 Cooperative regional projects on the genetic basis for resistance and immunity to avian diseases. This progress report states the results on the immunological difference in cytokine production in two genetically defined white leghorn chickens. These studies indicate that tumor-necrosis factor and transforming growth factor production is important in the genetic control of disease resistance to coccidiosis in chickens. Understanding of host genetic factors controlling coccidial resistance will enhance our ability to select disease resistant chickens.

Technical Abstract: In this annual report for NE-60 regional cooperative project, three main findings are reported. 1.) The chicken gene which encodes gamma- interferon has been cloned and expressed. 2.) To determine the immunological factors controlling disease resistance in SC and TK chickens, the production of tumor necrosis factor and transforming growth factor-betas were investigated. The results indicate that SC chickens, which are mildly susceptible to coccidia infection produce higher levels of these cytokines as compared to TK chickens which are highly susceptible. 3.) Chicken monoclonal antibody 6D12 which identifies a surface sporozoite protein of Eimeria shows cross-reactivity with other apicomplexan parasites.
