The current regulatory method for determining the action level (160 ppb) of Hal residues in chicken liver involves measurement of the parent compound. A quick and economical competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA) method for the determination of Hal residues in chicken liver tissue has been developed. The assay utilizes monoclonal antibodies specifically recognizing Hal. This method is much easier to use than the current HPLC method for Hal residue detection because it does not require a complex and tedious sample preparation scheme. Currently, this new cELISA method is being transferred to FSIS for potential use in it's Regulatory Program. A description of the cELISA method, it's success and limitations in respect to potential FSIS use will be presented. |
