Treated and untreated chicks were challenged with Salmonella typhimurium at 1 h after the CF3 treatment and at 3, 5, and 10 days of age to determine the time after treatment that CF3 is effective against Salmonella crop and cecal colonization. Crops were aseptically collected at 4 h after each challenge, while ceca were taken from additional chicks at 48 h after challenge, and cultured for Salmonella. Salmonella crop colonization in chicks challenged at 3 days of age was reduced (P<0.01) within 4 h after challenge from 70% in the controls to 20% in the CF3- treated chicks. Salmonella cecal colonization in chicks challenged at 5 days of age was reduced (P-0.05) in the treated chicks compared to controls and the population of Salmonella decreased (P<0.001) within 48 h after challenge from log10 5.9 Salmonella CFU in the controls to log10 1.2 CFU in the treated chicks. The results indicate that crop and cecal colonization by Salmonella were markedly and rapidly reduced in CF3- treated chicks. |
