Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The identification of soil properties that influence the risk of pesticide contamination of groundwater is one component in strategies for reducing the impact of agricultural management on groundwater quality. The objectives of this study were to integrate herbicide behavior over a range of soil properties and assess atrazine persistence in the surface 15 cm under field conditions. A Monte Carlo procedure in conjunction with a deterministic advection-dispersion equation was employed to evaluate the combined effects of spatially variable soil properties on atrazine persistence in soil. Sample distributions of model parameters were used to generate probability distributions of the change of atrazine content in the surface horizon during the growing season. The results indicated good agreement between the observed soil atrazine concentrations and model output.
