Interpretive Summary: A novel isolate of avian influenza virus (AIV) known as FJ/G9 was isolated and completely sequenced in China. The genome was found rather complicated by containing segments of deoxyribonucleic acids from multiple sources of other strains of AIV. This work sheds light on exploring and understanding the complexity and diversity of AIV genomics. The ARS Scientist only helped with the analyisis of virus sequence and preparation of the manuscript.
Technical Abstract: A Chicken/FJ/G9/09 (FJ/G9) is an H9N2 subtype strain of avian influenza virus (H9N2 AIV) strain causing high morbidity, that was isolated from broilers in Fujian province, China, in 2009. The FJ/G9 has been used as the vaccine strain against H9N2 AIV infection in Fujian Province of China. Here, we report the complete genome sequence of the FJ/G9 with a natural six-way reassortant structure, which is the most complex reassortant strain of AIV found so far in the world. The present finding provides new insight for better understanding of the complexity and diversity of H9N2 subtype avian influenza virus.
