Interpretive Summary: Food Intakes Converted to Retail Commodities Database (FICRCD) 2001-2002 has been developed to convert foods consumed in What We Eat In America, National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (WWEIA, NHANES) 2001-2002 to 65 retail-level commodities contained within eight major retail-level commodity categories. Using FICRCD, a table set was developed that includes national estimates of the amounts of 65 retail-level commodities per person estimated from day 1 dietary intake data of 9,033 individuals, ages 2 years and over, in the WWEIA, NHANES 2001-2002. The results for 2001-2002 show, for example, that fluid milk contributed 84% of the total dairy products commodity; oranges contributed 41%, apples 16%, bananas 8%, and melons 8% to the total fruits commodity; and potatoes contributed 28% to the total vegetable commodity. The estimates are useful to economists, food producers, nutritionists, and policymakers, and others who have need of food consumption data for U.S. population groups.
Technical Abstract: The table sets of national estimates of the amounts of retail commodities per person were estimated from the day 1 dietary intake data of 9,033 individuals, ages 2 years and over, in What We Eat In America, National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2001-2002 using the Food Intakes Converted to Retail Commodities Database (FICRCD) 2001-2002. These estimates are included for 23 age-gender groups. There are eight major retail-level commodity categories in FICRCD: Dairy Products; Fats and Oils; Fruits; Grains; Meat, Poultry, Fish and Eggs; Nuts; Caloric Sweeteners; and Vegetables, Dry Beans, and Peas (legumes). Because each major retail-level commodity category has several components, FICRCD contains 65 retail-level food commodities. The average amounts of selected retail-level commodities were estimated from the reported food intakes of individuals, ages 2 years and over; retail-level commodities providing the largest share of the commodity category included the following: of the total dairy products commodity (336 g/d), fluid milk contributed 84%; of the fats and oils commodity (34 g/d), salad or cooking oils were 53%; of the total fruit commodity (342 g/d), oranges were 41% and apples 16%; of the total grains commodity (127g/d), wheat flour was 73%; of the total meat, poultry, and fish commodity (163g/d), beef was 36% and chicken 31%; and of the total vegetables commodity (360g/d), tomatoes were 30%, potatoes 28%, sweet corn 7%, and total leafy vegetables 6%.
