Interpretive Summary: Food Intakes Converted to Retail Commodities Database (FICRCD) 1999-2000 has been developed to convert foods consumed in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2000 to 65 retail–level commodities contained within eight major retail-level commodity categories. Using FICRCD, a table set was developed that includes national estimates of the amounts of retail commodities per person estimated from day 1 dietary intake data of 8,074 individuals, ages 2 years and over, in the NHANES 1999-2000. Mean intakes of 65 retail-level commodities by 23 age-gender groups were estimated. The results for 1999-2000 show, for example, that fluid milk contributed 85% of the total dairy products commodity; oranges contributed 41%, apples 16%, bananas 9%, and melons 8% of the total fruit commodity; and potatoes 30% of the total vegetable commodity. The estimates are useful to economists, food producers, nutritionists, and policymakers, and others who have need of food consumption data for U.S. population groups.

Technical Abstract: Table sets of national estimates of the amounts of retail commodities per person were estimated from day 1 dietary intake data of 8,074 individuals, ages 2 years and over, in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2000 using the Food Intakes Converted to Retail Commodities Database (FICRCD) 1999-2000. These estimates are included for 23 age-gender groups. There are eight major retail-level commodity categories in FICRCD: Dairy Products; Fats and Oils; Fruits; Grains; Meat, Poultry, Fish and Eggs; Nuts; Caloric Sweeteners; and Vegetables, Dry Beans, and Peas (legumes). Because each major retail-level commodity category has several components, FICRCD contains 65 retail-level food commodities. The average amounts of selected retail-level commodities were estimated from the reported food intakes of individuals, ages 2 years and over; retail-level commodities providing the largest share of the commodity category included the following: of the total dairy products commodity (326 g/d), fluid milk contributed 85%; of the fats and oils commodity (35 g/d), salad or cooking oils were 46%; of the total fruit commodity (319g/d), oranges were 41% and apples 16%; of the total grains commodity (125g/d), wheat flour was 73%; of the total meat, poultry, and fish commodity (169g/d), beef was 37% and chicken 29%; and of the total vegetables commodity (371g/d), potatoes were 30%, tomatoes 28%, sweet corn 7%, and total leafy vegetables 7%. A complete list of foods within each retail-level commodity is included in Appendix A.
