Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Bacterial cold water disease (BCWD) is a frequent cause of elevated loss in juvenile salmonid fish and development of effective control strategies is a priority. At the National Center for Cool and Cold Water Aquaculture (NCCCWA), we initiated a multidisciplinary program designed to better understand and control BCWD through integrated research on host-pathogen and environmental interactions. Herein, we review progress in the NCCCWA breeding and evaluation program. In addition, we discuss the use of comparative genomics to develop of PCR assays to discriminate between Flavobacterium psychrophilum strains. On-farm trials are planned to evaluate progress in our genetic improvement program under relevant production conditions and experiencing natural challenge. We suggest that combining selective breeding and pathogen genomics offers a systematic approach to define the impact of pathogen variation on host resistance and thereby better understand the molecular basis of host-pathogen interaction in domesticated trout.
