Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Use of the conventional quinoline-based drugs for the symptomatic treatment of malaria is gradually being replaced by artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) due to increasing resistance by the Plasmodium parasite. This development has drastically increased artemisinin demand worldwide, and Artemisia annua L. is currently the only feasible source for the supply of this bioactive compound to the international market. This review discusses the role of artemisinin-based drugs against malaria and highlights the development of agro-technologies and biotechnological and extraction approaches in enhancing the total yield of artemisinin. Collectively, these technologies have the potential to increase the production of artemisinin per unit area of cultivation and decrease the final cost of artemisinin-based combination therapies, which are currently in short supply and unaffordable to most Africans who bear the highest malaria burden. |
