Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Urediniospore isolates of Puccinia triticina were obtained from wheat leaf samples in the Central, Central Chernozem, and North Caucasus of Russia in 2004. Twenty eight races of the pathogen were identified on 12 Lr near-isogenic Thatcher lines. The identified races were classified into five groups: C (virulent to Lr3a), F (virulent to Lr2c and Lr3a), M (virulent to Lr1), P (virulent to Lr1, Lr2c, and Lr3a), and T (virulent to Lr1, Lr2a, Lr2c, and Lr3a). The races of M and P groups were widespread in the Central region, the races of F and P groups were mainly in the Central Chernozem region, and the races of C, T, and M groups were present in the North Caucasus region. The race PGT (17%) was predominant in the Central population, the races PGT (24%) and FHT (22%) were predominant in the Central Chernozem population, and the races CCT (17%) and TCT (13%) were predominant in the North Caucasus population. Virulence patterns on 29 Lr lines in the North Caucasus region and on 28 Lr lines in the Central and Central Chernozem regions were established using 34 Lr near-isogenic lines and cultivars with single resistance genes. Nine lines (Lr3a, Lr3bg, Lr11, Lr17, Lr18, Lr21, Lr30, Lr33, and LrB) were susceptible while lines with Lr9, Lr24, Lr29, Lr38, and LrW were resistant to all tested isolates.
